Fatal Truck Accidents in Georgia

By Evan L. Kaine

The commercial trucking industry is larger than many might think. Men and women across the country are logging more and more mileage to their odometers as they transport goods for our benefit. Their job is to do it safely, effectively and most of all, efficiently. Sadly, commercial vehicles are involved in thousands of motor vehicle accidents every year.

According to the CDC, 317,000 motor vehicle accidents, involving large commercial trucks, occurred in a single year. In the same year, the United States economy paid an estimated $99 billion due to bus and truck accidents. Historically, each year the number of trucking accidents and fatalities increases. In one year alone, approximately 700 truck drivers, or their passengers, were killed and more than 26,000 were injured in accidents. Of these, only one-third of the accident victims were wearing a safety belt.

We’re constantly reminded of the importance of wearing a safety belt. From random police traffic stops to public service announcements, the message is clear, but seems to fall on many deaf ears – at least among many truck drivers.

The Number of Georgia Truck Accidents

The number of fatal truck accidents could be reduced, every year, if truck drivers wear their safety belt. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) says, “The smartest strategy for overall safety is to prevent truck crashes from happening in the first place.” The NIOSH goes on to mention how vitally important it is for the trucking industry to demand comprehensive and current safety training to all drivers.

Much like the rest of the country, Georgia consumers rely on the trucking industry to transport and deliver goods. However, that delivery service should not come as an expense to any other drivers by causing truck accidents. Please contact us if you or a loved one has been involved in a truck accident.
